Dr Farrukh Alam

Dr Farrukh Alam is Harbor’s Medical Director and an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist with more than 25 years of experience supporting people with psychological difficulties.

He trained as a general adult psychiatrist and treats mood disorders, but his specialist field is addiction to substances as well as behaviours. That includes people struggling with alcohol, drugs and other compulsive behaviours.

In addition to his work at Harbor, Dr Alam holds a senior NHS role as an Associate Medical Director within an NHS Foundation Trust. He also serves as Clinical Advisor to the Civil Aviation Authority.

Professional Background & Qualifications

Dr Alam gained a BSc at the University of St Andrews before completing his MB ChB at the University of Manchester.

His psychiatric training included work in the national drug and alcohol units at the Maudsley Hospital in London. He holds specialist accreditation in general psychiatry and addiction.

Dr Alam is a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and is registered with the General Medical Council.

Healthcare Leadership & Experience

Outside clinical work, Dr Alam writes and speaks about addiction for a wide audience. His work has appeared in international journals, and he has spoken at conferences abroad and at the House of Lords. He has also discussed addiction in the national and international media.

He has written psychiatric medico-legal reports for 25 years and currently produces around 40 a year. He also holds a Medico-Legal Expert’s Certificate accredited by City University London and The Inns of Court School of Law.
