rTMS
Uncovering new possibilities in mental wellbeing with rTMS therapy
Often, individuals living with mental health challenges may not respond effectively to traditional treatment methods. For example, almost half of those taking antidepressants see no symptomatic improvement, and some also may not want to use pharmaceutical therapies due to their systemic side effects. Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) offers a cutting-edge alternative, or supplementary, therapy to augment overall recovery plans.
It is a treatment technology that uses gentle magnetic waves to stimulate specific areas of the brain, leading to profound changes in mood, behaviour, and overall wellbeing. It was approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in 2008 for treating major depression and has since had extensive research in demonstrating its effectiveness in treating a myriad of mental health conditions.
What to expect from rTMS
Those living with a mental health condition or addiction experience alterations in brain activity – notably in regions that are involved with regulating mood and behaviour, such as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. These profound physiological changes often manifest themselves in the form of low mood, increased anxieties and the development of addictive behaviours, among other mental wellbeing concerns. However, this is also the foundation on which the effectiveness of rTMS is built. During a session, a magnetic coil is placed over the head. This generates repetitive trains of magnetic pulses that safely and painlessly reach targeted brain regions to induce electric currents in the nerve cells. This alters nerve activity, improving symptoms associated with mental health conditions.
The procedure is entirely non-invasive, allowing you to remain fully conscious and resume your normal activities immediately after each session. A typical rTMS treatment course involves daily 20-40 minute sessions for four to six weeks, followed by a tapering-off period. Our state-of-the-art rTMS treatment suite is conducted in a private and utterly discreet London-based property, and can seamlessly fit into your overarching treatment plan or daily routine.

How rTMS can help you
For individuals living with mental health challenges, rTMS offers a safe and highly effective alternative for those who have not responded to traditional treatment methods or wish to avoid the side effects that come with pharmaceutical medication, like sexual dysfunction and weight gain. It can also be used as a supplement to a comprehensive treatment plan that includes other therapeutic modalities.
Clinical trials have demonstrated rTMS’s efficacy in improving symptoms of:
- Depression
- Anxiety disorders
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Alcohol and substance cravings
- Addictive behaviours
