Robert Green is a BACP-accredited Psychotherapist at Harbor who specialises in addiction and attachment theory.

He is particularly interested in how the attachments people form early in life play out during addiction and later in recovery. Attachment styles, the patterns people develop for relating to others, can shape both how someone uses substances and how they cope once they stop.

Robert has also been in recovery himself since 1987, after ten years of active addiction, so his understanding of addiction comes from lived experience as well as training.

Professional Background & Qualifications

Robert qualified at the Westminster Pastoral Foundation in psychodynamic counselling and group analytic skills.

He is a registered and accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, and has also been accredited by the Federation of Drug and Alcohol Professionals.

His continuing professional development has focused on attachment theory, including training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.

Healthcare Leadership & Experience

Before training as a therapist in the late 1990s, Robert ran a retail business. He has since run a private psychotherapy practice in Chelsea for nearly 30 years. His years in business before therapy also give him an understanding of the pressures facing clients who run companies or work in demanding jobs.

He has also worked with charities that support people affected by addiction and relational trauma.

Approach to Care

Robert’s approach is relational and rooted in his psychodynamic training. His group analytic training adds an understanding of how people relate within groups, including families.

With addiction, he looks beyond the drinking, drug use or other behaviour itself to the relationships and experiences that feed it.

At Harbor, he works with clients at every stage, from active addiction to long-term recovery.
